SHEFFIELD JUNIORS RETAIN TITLE

After winning the title last year they were the team to beat but the squad held strong over the season losing only once, winning the other six fixtures.

Joint team manager Dennis Clarke praised the boys for the quality of their play, bolstered by a strong camaraderie.

He said: “We have a great set of junior players we can draw on and we rotated the team bringing in new blood when required by various other call-ups. No matter who has represented the Sheffield Union they have all played well and shown exceptional team spirit.

“They have all played out of their socks and even when one of them has lost a game they have gone down fighting.”

Last night the team won by eight points to four wrapping up another memorable season. Their single defeat means the junior team, sponsored by D C Roofing,  has only lost twice in fourteen outings over two seasons.

The year has also produced some great individual performances. Among them were from Nathan Muffett from Phoenix Golf Club and Kealan Lowe from Wheatley, who were crowned joint Yorkshire under 16 boys’ champions, while Alex Fitzpatrick of Hallamshire was crowned the under 14s champion in the same competition. Alex, dubbed “the Serena Williams of the Fitzpatrick family” by Mike Walker, coach to Alex’s elder brother Matt, also came third on countback in the Douglas Johns Trophy, the unofficial England under 15s championship.
