Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs

SUGC MR GOLF RETIRES!

He steps down this month as Treasurer of the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs and Secretary of the Sheffield Union Members Association (SUMA).

For many years Eric has played a major part in promoting amateur golf throughout the Sheffield region supporting the development of juniors and elite players as well as carrying out some of the essential backroom administrative duties for the Sheffield Union.

He was elected President of the Union in 2011, served as Treasurer for 12 years and, for the past 17 years has also led a group of people, including his wife Pat, in running SUMA events. He has been Captain and President and, for twenty years, Junior Manager of his home club, Dore and Totley. His contribution is recognised throughout the sport locally where he is affectionately known as “Boss” and as “Uncle Eric” to most of the juniors.

He was praised by the Union’s current President, Graham Needham, who said: “Eric has been a corner stone of the Sheffield Union for many years. As well as being President and Treasurer, he somehow found the time to run SUMA and has put in a lot of work developing junior golf.  But, he is a bit like Frank Sinatra as I am sure he will make a comeback in some shape or form. Like Frank, he did it ‘My Way’, so I am sure he will not step into the shadows completely.”

Eric acknowledged that he does not intend to disappear off the golfing scene for good and said: “It has been a tremendous honour to serve the Union and to have been its President. I intend to retain an interest in golf in all sorts of ways and will do anything required of me by the Union.”

The new Union Treasure is Derek Vallance from Wath Golf Club and Graham Billups from Roundwood Golf Club has taken over the running of SUMA.
