OVER THE MOON.

Both men finished level on 147 after 36 holes on a cold, wet and windy Hallamshire course and faced a sudden death play-off over the last three holes.

Nothing separated the pair after 40 holes but Moon clinched victory with a two on Hallamshire’s 17th par three the second time round.

The win caps a fine month for the 21-year-old from Rotherham Golf Club. Moon was successful in the northern qualifier of the Men’s Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Pleasington on May 21, joining team-mate Jamie Harrison to compete in the final for the famous Brabazon Trophy at Formby next month.

A field of 63 entered the Sheffield Plate this year with competitors from the region joined by others from outside, including Canadian visitor Richard Smith, from Chilliwack Golf and Country Club, near Vancouver.

Hallamshire was in superb condition but the weather made good scoring very difficult. Players had to contend with a cold north-westerly wind blowing hard all day, with bright sunshine interspersed with rain and hail.

Moon and Brennan were joint leaders after the morning round, each carding 71, with Luke Robinson, from Hornsea, poised to strike just one shot behind.

The afternoon session saw both leaders return with 76, setting the scene for the showdown play-off. Robinson shot 77, leaving him two behind in joint fourth position. Third, one shot behind the winner, was Sam Young from Bawtry.

Best afternoon round was a very creditable 70 from Ben Brewster, also from Bawtry.

In the play-off Moon kept his nerve and snatched victory in the middle of a ferocious downpour.

He said: “I’d like to thank Hallamshire for the course which was in superb condition. These were the best greens I’ve putted on this year.”

The Sheffield Plate is the top event in the region for men’s amateur golfers. Sponsored by Sheffield Special Steels it has been hosted by Hallamshire since 1993. Previous winners include Rotherham’s Danny Willett, now a European Tour player.

SUGC President and Hallamshire Captain Vic Day

Hallamshire Captain, Vic Day said: “It is a tradition for Hallamshire to host this superb competition. We can always produce a course in top condition but we can’t do anything with the weather. It is unbelievable how these top players managed to cope with the very difficult conditions today.”
