SHEFFIELD SENIOR TEAM JUST GET BETTER AND BETTER

To win one Inter-District league crown is a magnificent achievement but to then go on and win it again the following season in such great style is very special indeed.

Going into this match, played on a spectacular looking Halifax-Ogden golf course, Team Manager Ian Clarke and his players knew that even a narrow defeat against their second placed rivals would be good enough to once again lift the championship trophy. Any thoughts of a defeat in this challenging away fixture were quickly banished however, as Sheffield established an important lead in the morning’s foursomes matches by 8 points to 4.

Large wins by Daniel Wasteney (Bondhay GC) and Jonny McAllister (Tankersley Park GC) by 4&2, Dominic Moon (Rotherham GC) and Lewis Hollingworth (Tankersley Park GC) by 5&3, Richard Hodgkinson (Lindrick GC) and Gary Fullwood (Wath GC pictured above) by 5&3 and finally Neil Stones (Bawtry GC) and Nathan Rogers (Wortley GC pictured below) by 4&3 established a great platform going into the twelve afternoon singles matches.

Team confidence started to flow in the singles and Sheffield eventually managed to win seven of the matches on offer. Success in the afternoon was down to wins by Wasteney by 5&3, McAllister by 4&3, Hollingworth by 3&2, Rogers by 1up, Fullwood by 4&3, Stones by 4&2, Richard Oades (Abbeydale GC) by 5&4 and a valuable half from Jamie Harrison (Rotherham GC).

The final score of 23 points to 13 in favour of Sheffield, underlined their superiority in this match at the end of a long, hard season of Yorkshire Inter-District encounters. If anything, this was probably the team’s finest win of the season, against a determined and talented Halifax and Huddersfield side and played on a golf course that very few of the Sheffield players had ever seen before.

So attention now switches to next season and the possibility of the Sheffield Senior Team making it a hat-trick of league title wins, something that they last achieved way back in the 1997/98/99 seasons.
