FIRST TIME WIN FOR SICKLEHOLME AT LINDRICK

Now in it’s thirtieth year, this very popular competition is open to golfers with handicaps between six and twelve and is played on a knock-out basis throughout the season on neutral golf courses, with the final being held at the famous Lindrick GC.

It took four wins “on the road” for each club to reach the final this year, with Wheatley defeating Sandhill, Worksop and Beauchief in rounds one, two and three followed by a win against Sitwell Park from Rotherham in the semi-final.

Sickleholme had to work equally as hard to get to Lindrick with early season wins over Bondhay, Doncaster and Phoenix before seeing off Hillsborough in the semi-final.

With a best of three matches format to decide the final, Sickleholme took the opening tie when their pairing of Richard Kay and Danny Bailey defeated Ben Chappell and Steve Bell by a score of 3&1 (pictured below).

In match number two, Wheatley quickly made up the lost ground when Robin Hamshaw and Russ Metcalfe won their match by 5&3 against Sickleholme’s Andy Oxley and Neil Hilton.

In a tense third and final match, with the destiny of the championship trophy resting on the four players’ shoulders, it was the Sickleholme pairing of Andy Naylor and Nigel Matthews who came out on top with a decisive 4&3 win against Graham Moss and Mark Davies from Wheatley.

Wheatley’s two matches to one defeat in the final scuppered their hopes of winning this championship for the second year in a row, after also being first time winners of the event last year.
