Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs

JUST ONE STEP AWAY FROM A MEMORABLE DOUBLE

Unbeaten so far during the last two seasons, Sheffield stated their intentions immediately in the morning foursomes matches with four wins out of the six matches played, going into lunch with a healthy 8 points to 4 lead over the home team.

Jamie Harrison was teamed with fellow Rotherham GC member and recent Sheffield Stroke Play Champion Shaun Angell and the combination proved a great success with a 3&2 win. Youngsters Dominic Moon (Rotherham GC pictured below) and Lewis Hollingworth (Tankersley Park GC) also had an emphatic win by 4&2 and the experienced pairings of Ian Clarke (Wath GC) and David Briggs (Renishaw Park GC) plus Richard Hodgkinson (Lindrick GC) and Gary Fullwood (Wath GC) weighed in with valuable wins of their own.

Sheffield certainly didn’t get all their own way in the afternoon singles as the York team fought hard in every match. However, wins for Moon, Angell, Hodgkinson, Briggs, Sam Young (Rotherham GC) and Neil Stones (Bawtry GC) plus a halved match from Lewis Hollingworth proved more than enough for another fine away win for the Sheffield team.

A 21 points to 15 win “on the road” is always a good score and was even more outstanding against an improving York side that had the distinction of winning last year’s Yorkshire Inter-District Six Man Team Stroke Play Championship.

With only one match left this season, against the Halifax and Huddersfield Union, another league title is very much in the sights of the Sheffield team and the added incentive of going through the whole season with a perfect record is likely to make for a great finale on the 2nd September at Ogden GC, Halifax.
