SHEFFIELD JUNIORS TAKE THE LEAGUE TITLE WITH A GAME TO GO

This made no difference to the final league table, however, as the Sheffield youngsters had already won the league title the previous week, with one match still to play, by registering their sixth straight win of the season in a home match against the Teesside Juniors.

Played on the Wortley GC course, Sheffield surprisingly found themselves trailing at lunchtime by 5 points to 7 after struggling to find their form in the morning foursomes matches. Wins for Lewis Thompson (Wath GC pictured below) and Kurtis Keating (Sandhill GC pictured above) by 3&2 and Jonathan Thompson (Lindrick GC) and Nick Poppleton (Wath GC) by a score of 1up were the only bright spots for the team in the foursomes.

Going into the afternoon singles matches it was all to play for and to the great credit of Sheffield’s Juniors, they managed to raise their games considerably and, in the process, overwhelm Teesside by winning nine and halving two of the twelve singles matches played.

Lewis Thompson (5&4) and Kurtis Keating (4 & 3) continued their fine form by registering large wins on behalf of the team and they were joined in the winners’ circle by Liam Senior (Lees Hall GC), Nathan Fell (Lees Hall GC), Ben Brewster (Bawtry GC), Guy Winstanley (Wheatley GC), Nyle Challinor (Sitwell Park GC pictured below), Will Hawksworth (Abbeydale GC) and Jonathan Thompson. Valuable halved matches were also recorded in the singles by James Gregg (Abbeydale GC) and Nick Poppleton.

To win the league title in such impressive and dominant fashion bodes well for the future of golf in the Sheffield Union area and it repeats the juniors’ win in this championship in 2010.

Congratulations to all the junior golfers who have represented Sheffield so well this season and best wishes to them next season in their quest to retain the Yorkshire Inter-District title.
