ANGELL DELIGHT! Shaun is Stroke Play Champion

Just three weeks after winning the Sheffield Mid-Amateur Championship at Wheatley GC, Rotherham’s Shaun Angell was at it once again when he won the Sheffield Stroke Play Championship at Renishaw Park GC.

Trailing first round leader and fellow Thrybergh member Sam Young by four shots at lunchtime, Shaun put together a great second round score of three under par 68 for a two round total of 141. As Young faded badly in the afternoon with a round of 80, it was left to Wortley’s Nathan Rogers to come through and match playing partner Angell shot for shot with a 73 and a 68 for an identical 141 total.

Pictured below are the two finalists from the Play-off, Shaun (L) and Nathan (R) In the centre is the Officer In Charge for the day, Alan Marriott.

So it was back on the course for a sudden-death playoff for the second consecutive year following Lewis Hollingworth edging out Wath’s Gary Fullwood in extra play in 2011. On this occasion, Shaun took control early on and his birdie four on the first play-off hole was good enough to secure his first win in this championship that boasts an array of memorable winners such as past Yorkshire Amateur Champions, Bernard Meldrum, Ian MacKenzie, Tony Gelsthorpe, Steve Field, Richard Jones and Shaun Tarplett.

Third place went to last year’s runner-up Gary Fullwood on 145 with John Bragger from Hillsborough GC one shot further back in fourth.

ED's Footnote. Shaun's good form continued the following morning at the Hillsborough Invitation, where he partnered John White, shot 46 points AND finished second to a 48 point total!!
