HOME BOY JOSH IS OPEN CHAMP

The one handicapper came out on top from a talented field of fellow amateurs and local professionals in this 36 hole championship which was first played for back in 1949 and boasts notable winners such as current world famous coaching guru Peter Cowen, former Yorkshire Amateur Champions Tony Gelsthorpe and Richard Jones and former England International Paul Nelson.

After a solid one under par morning round of 69, Josh found himself at the top of the leader board, tied with fellow Rotherham member Sam Young. One shot back on level par was a group of five players ; professional Michael Hempstock plus amateurs Nick Poppleton (Wath GC), Ben Brewster (Bawtry GC), Mike Hammond (Wath GC) and Nathan Rogers (Wortley GC). In close pursuit on one over par 71 was Tom Keating (Sandhill GC) with Joel Cartledge (Wheatley GC) on 72.

It was all to play for in the second round and fine sub-par rounds by professional Sam Haywood (67) and Tom Pipes from Hillsborough GC (69) moved them significantly in the right direction on the leaderboard.

Youngsters Poppleton and Brewster repeated their morning scores of 70 for a 36 hole level par total of  140, but it was left to Shaw and Hempstock to battle it out for the title on an immaculately presented Thrybergh course.

A two under par afternoon round saw Michael finish just one shot shy of the winning score as Josh matched his round of 68 to win this prestigious Sheffield Union title with a final score of 137.
