SHEFFIELD SENIOR TEAM EDGE A CLOSE FOUGHT MATCH

In a very close run encounter at Hillsborough Golf Club, where the overall result was in doubt until the final match on the course had been completed, Sheffield came out on top by 20 points to 16.

The Sheffield team normally comes “out of the blocks” very quickly in the morning foursomes but on this occasion they had to settle for a share of the spoils as the teams went into lunch with 6 points each on the score sheet.

Star performers in the foursomes were the pairings of Joe Dean (Lindrick GC pictured above) and Jamie Harrison (Rotherham GC) who won by 5 and 3, Sam Young (Rotherham GC) and Team Captain Ian Clarke (Wath GC) by 2 and 1 and veterans Richard Hodgkinson (Lindrick GC) and David Briggs (Renishaw Park GC) by 3 and 2.

In the afternoon singles, the Harrogate Union team put up a great fight on a course that many of their team members were playing for the first time.

Solid wins for Sheffield by Joe Dean 6 & 4, Tom Perry (Abbeydale GC) 5 & 4, Lewis Hollingworth (Tankersley Park GC) 3 & 2, Jonny McCallister (Tankersley Park GC) 2 & 1 and John Bragger (Tinsley Park GC pictured below) by 1up were supported with vital halved matches from Scott Campbell (Hallowes GC) and Nathan Rogers (Wortley GC).

With the final match result still in the balance, it came down to the last game on the course to decide the outcome and it was left to Richard Hodgkinson to secure the vital win when he made a battling par down the 17th hole against his opponent Jim Coldwell from Knaresborough Golf Club.

This stiff test for Sheffield in their opening match of the league campaign gives the team considerable confidence for the season ahead which now moves on to the next match against the Leeds Golf Union on the 10th June at Wetherby Golf Club.
