Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs

HARROGATE V SUGC

Lancashire’s decision to arrange their fixture with the Yorkshire Union on the same day as our scheduled Y.I.D.U. fixtures together with holidays and individual club competitions created a problem of player availability with 7 of our players involved in the above.

We are very appreciative to those who turned out for us.

The Knaresborough course was in first-class condition and manicured to a high standard both on and off the fairways.  The greens matched these standards.

On the Saturday no play at all was possible on the course due to the inclement weather so we were grateful to the grounds staff for getting the course prepared for us to play.

Harrogate’s team work and play matched the course conditions as it was clear after losing the foursomes in the morning 8 and 4 that our task was not going to be easy to get a favorable result.  However, we did our best and pulled back some wins and some halves but eventually went down 23 to 13.

I cannot stress how impressed I was with the attitude and commitment of our players who remained in a positive frame of mind throughout the day and especially thank the 2 caddies from Waterfront Golf Club who travelled up and supported us during the afternoon.

Harrogate were very good hosts; their team played in a very sportsman like manner supported by their President, match officials and no less than 5 former Presidents.
