GOOD WIN FOR OUR YIDU JUNIORS

A strong south westerly wind greeted the junior team on its arrival at Kirk Ella which made it an unseasonably cold morning which became colder as the wind strengthened throughout the day.  They were met by a well organised and determined East Riding team who were hoping that home advantage and local knowledge would give them the upper hand in what could be the crunch fixture of the season.

The Sheffield team, however, were exhibiting a quiet determination about them that they should rectify the demise they suffered in the match against Halifax and Huddersfield.  Once the matches got underway club selection and judgement of line was proving difficult in the wind and with fast running greens judgement of distance was something of a lottery.

The early exchanges in the morning foursomes were certainly going in favour of the hosts, but when in difficulties throwing an eagle and a birdie at the opposition in successive holes redresses the balance somewhat and Sheffield finished the morning with three comfortable wins, one resounding win and one final hole victory with only one loss to enjoy a 10 – 2 points advantage at lunch.

The afternoon conditions for the singles were getting increasingly difficult and this is where Sheffield’s strength in depth really began to tell, although once again we got off to quite a slow start.  We suffered our only loss of the afternoon singles in the top of the draw, recording one win, one halved match and one loss in the first three matches.  The rest of the matches settled in to a very similar pattern with, for the most part, Sheffield in control, although having had the eagle and birdie thrown at him in the morning, the East Riding player returned the compliment with three successive birdies on the back nine to turn what was going to be a heavy defeat into a one hole deficit. In the final calculation though Sheffield enjoyed six impressive wins by four holes or better, three wins where the margin was tighter, two halved matches and experienced only one loss to finish the day with a very satisfying 30 – 6 point victory to inflict East Riding’s first defeat of the season.
