Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs

First win for YIDU Senior Squad

The hottest Sunday of the year to date saw a well presented Wheatley Golf Club host the fixture between Sheffield and a very determined Teesside Union.  The fairways were fiery, the rough punishing but the greens were receptive and good.

The morning foursomes were well contested with some remarkable scores being carded.  The opening match alone saw six birdies, alas not all of them for Sheffield, but eventually Sheffield went to lunch with a narrow 7 – 5 advantage.

The afternoon singles was a real curate’s egg with a mixed bag of performances.  The opening match was conceded because of an injury to Sheffield’s lead player and as the afternoon temperature increased the heat began to take its toll, resulting in some poorly executed shots and injudicious decision making.  At a time when our middle matches were enjoying comfortable mid-round leads suddenly bogeys were being recorded successively, turning what looked like wins into 18th hole defeats. Fine rear guard performances, however, turned a tight situation into a fine 23 -13 victory for Sheffield.
