Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs

JUNIOR YIDU TEAM LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs (Juniors) v Halifax & Huddersfield Union (Juniors)

The teams arrived at Tankersley Park Golf Club with the scenario of three possible outcomes, a Sheffield win by any score giving them the championship, a defeat would give the title to Leeds but a 24 – 12 victory for H & H giving them the title.

The foursomes began well for H & H with the lead match opening up a 3 hole advantage but good play from the Doncaster pairing of Johnson Rolfe and Mitchell brought the match to ma conclusion of all square ( 1 point each). The second game looked to be going the way of Sheffield but victory was denied when a tiny putt on the final hole not only cost a point but gave the visitors the victory (1 -3).Aiden Silman, in his final match for the union Juniors, along with Brandon Swords had a resounding 6 & 5 victory (3 – 3)quickly followed by a 3 &2 win for Jack Aldridge & Isaac Marks (5 – 3). Match 5 fluctuated in favour of both teams but eventual the Sheffield pair of Jonty Butcher and Evan Snook went down 2&1 leaving the score tied at 5 – 5. The final game, with two of our younger players, was won by the club selection on the penultimate hole. With the match all square the visitors had the honour on the 17th tee and hit a wild tee shot left of the green, the Sheffield player hit a wonderful iron down the fairway and secured the win when his partner put the second shot on the green with the visitors unable to do better than 5 the final hole was halved and the result of 1 up gave Sheffield a lunch time advantage of 7 – 5

The afternoon singles started badly for Sheffield with defeats for Kyle (2&1), Aiden (3&1) and Jacob Mitchell eventually losing 1 down after looking well beaten earlier in the match, The Luke Schmidt Loui Goff pairing of this morning made amends for the morning defeat by recording 5&4 2&1 wins in the afternoon and with an all-square result for Jonty Butcher it was now only Leeds or Sheffield for the title

A defeat for Jack Aldridge, who played an opponent who seemed never to be able to miss a putt, was quickly followed by 5 wins for Sheffield in the shape of Evan Snook demolishing his opponent 9&8, Brandon another great performance in winning 6&5, Isaac Marks 3&1 and the two morning heroes Dylan and Joel recording 4&3 and 8&6 wins.

This left the overall score at 22 – 14 and the title of YIDU junior Champions to Sheffield

Congratulations to the Sheffield team (11 of today’s team can play next year) and big thank you to Jack Whaley – Junior Captain 2022, Aiden Silman and Sam Ford who now are over age for the Juniors for all their time and effort and ability they have brought to this
