SENIOR YIDU TEAM ARE 2022 CHAMPIONS

We arrived at Sickleholme GC for the final match against Leeds knowing that a win would give us the distinction of a season unbeaten.

The morning foursomes didn't start smoothly, with the first pairing of Ollie Smith & George Ash quickly going 3 down and the second pairing of Charlie Daughtrey and Luca Houlgate 2 down. Both pairs rallied and soon overturned the deficit before pulling away to 3&2 and 5&3 wins respectively. The next couple of matches were more closely contested : Lewis Harrison & Nyle Challinor winning 2up and Tim Brind & Lucas Martin winning 2&1. The latter pairing being behind for much of the match until a run of three straight birdies on the back nine turned the match in their favour. The Wath pairing of Tom Stanley & Jamie Sykes proved too strong for their opponents winning 4&2 leaving just the one match left out on the course. Matt Swindell and Jon Berrisford seemed in control of the last match before birdies on the 16th & 17th by their opponents took the match down the last. However they dug deep to win the last giving Sheffield a clean sweep of the morning foursomes and a 12 - 0 lead.

Onto the afternoon singles with everyone wondering, could we repeat the 36 - 0 result of the last match ????

Ollie Smith led the team into the singles and battled to a 3&1 win. That was quickly followed by Charlie Daughtrey who took control of his match early winning 4&3. George Ash was made to work by his opponent who took him down the last, but George proved too strong winning 1up. Luca Houlgate recorded a comfortable 4&2 quickly followed by Tom Stanley who had the biggest winning singles margin, 7&6. The next two matches, Lewis Harrison & Nyle Challinor, were won by the margin of 2&1 meaning Sheffield had now claimed the first six single matches. Lucas Martin battled back from 2 down thru 12 holes to be 1 up with two holes to play. A birdie from his opponent on the 17th however squared the match. A half in pars on the last saw the match halved leaving Lucas disappointed, but after being down for most of his match getting a half showed great spirit. 36-0 now off the table attentions turned to the final four matches. Jamie Sykes 3&2, Matt Swindell 4&2 & Jon Berrisford 3&2 all proved too strong for their opposition leaving just Tim Brinds match live. Tim was 1 up with 3 holes to play but birdies on the 16th & 17th by his opponent had him standing on the last tee 1 down. Both players parred the last giving Leeds their only win of the day. Match score 33 - 3, a very impressive end to the league season.

28 players from 14 different clubs, adding up to 7 wins, NO losses and a season to remember. Well done to all those who have represented the Union as well as those who have helped and supported in making this year a success. Your commitment and time sacrificed has been very much appreciated.
