36 - 0

Match No 6, Sheffield V's York at Hallowes GC on Sun 21st Aug.

York arrived at Hallowes on the back of 5 successive losses but nobody could have predicted how the day was about to unfold.

George Ash and Ollie Smith led out the team in the morning foursomes and in the space of no time were heading back to the clubhouse having won their match 10&8. They were quickly followed by the second and third matches, Charlie Daughtrey and Tom Osborne 9&7, Jack Whaley and Lewis Harrison 5&4.

The remaining three matches were more closely contested with Tim Brind and Neil Stones who were behind most of the morning grinding down their opponents to win 1up. Steve Bridges and Tom Little 3&1, Nyle Challinor and Jim Tasker 2&1 completed a clean sweep of the morning foursomes to give Sheffield a 12-0 lead.

Hallowes member George Ash led out the team in the afternoon singles and quickly took control of his match winning by a comfortable margin, 6&4, ending his match with a pin rattling tee shot at the par 3, 14th which narrowly avoided dropping in for an ace. Four of the next five matches, Ollie Smith 6&5, Charlie Daughtrey 7&6, Jack Whaley 7&5 and Lewis Harrison 6&5 all proved too  strong for their opponents recording impressive wins. Tom Osborne battled from behind early in his match to win 2&1, which showed great spirit. The Hickleton duo of Steve Bridges 4&2 and Tom Little 2&1 were next to record wins leaving just the last four matches on the course. Wins came quickly in the last three, Neil Stones 7&6, Tim Brind 4&3 and Jim Tasker 7&6 now leaving just the one match, Nyle Challinor, still live.

After being 2 down thru 10 holes Nyle battled back to all square thru 15 holes. After losing the par 5, 16th, it was time to dig deep and roll up the sleeves if there was any hope of a clean sweep. After a conceded birdie putt from six feet on the par 4, 17th, Nyle was back to all square and it was all to play for down the last. A remarkable tee shot on the 350yd par 4 last saw Nyle drive his ball onto the front edge of the green which led to a resulting birdie and a win 1up.

History made and an outstanding 36 - 0 win achieved.

League title secured with a match to go against Leeds on Sun 4th Sept at Sickleholme. No signs of complacency though from myself or the players who are determined to end the season unbeaten champions.

Neil Allen.
