HESSLE GOLF CLUB: SUNDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2019

The last YIDU match of the 2019 season was at Hessle where it would be good to achieve a result to lend encouragement for the next season. The foursomes provided fluctuating results. Our lead pair of Jim Tasker/Ollie Smith, from being A/S on the 6th lost holes quickly to be 3 down by the turn, but clawed their way back on the second half to score an A/S result. Nathan Fell/Lewis Gill were repeatedly A/S, but after a ruling or two not to their advantage, never quite managed to escape from a minus score, losing 2&1. Omens not good? However, the remaining pairings recorded positive scores: Mark Woodall/Conor Clarke kept increasing their lead to 3&2; Michael Sowerby/Joel Cartlidge fluctuated either side of A/S, ending 1up; and Dean Longden/Jon Berrisford, A/S on the 15th sprinted to a 2&1 win. So, the positive 7-5 points to Sheffield were achieved at lunchtime in only the second match in 2019.

First off in the singles was Jim who recorded a notable win (4&2) against Jack Maxey, the Yorkshire Boys Captain, at least half his age. Ollie starting strongly, 3up on the 6th, succumbed to a barrage of birdies from which he could not finally recover (1down). Nathan played well to achieve a 4&2 win. Lewis, also battered by birdies was 3down after 4 and 8 holes, but dug in deep to achieve a 1up win. George carded an excellent 1 under par round to win 5&4. Our remaining games were evenly won/lost: good wins were achieved by Conor (3&2); Joel, in his own words “recalled from 2 years of retirement”, a 4&3 win; and finally Jon 4&2. The great delight was seeing all our players who had finished their games, standing around the challenging 16th green, cheering on the above players – what we call “our plus factor”! In sum, thanks to a final winning flourish for Sheffield with a final score of 21-15 points, there was relief and encouragement all round, as can surely be seen in the ‘team’ photo below.

One more event, the YIDU Team Championship, takes place this coming weekend, with the 36 holes played on Sunday 8 September at The Oaks. Our Sheffield team is Lewis Hollingworth, Ollie Smith, Charlie Daughtrey, Jim Tasker, Neil Stones and Tim Brind, with Mark Woodall as reserve. We wish them the best of golfing luck!
