SUGC V LEEDS

HILLSBOROUGH GOLF CLUB: SUNDAY 4 AUGUST 2019

I suspect that everybody will be familiar with the childhood game of ‘Snakes and Ladders’: as will no doubt be remembered, if one lands on the bottom of a ladder, you can progress up to the top to a square beyond where you were; conversely, if one lands on the top of a snake, you have to slide back down to squares you have already passed.

The match on Sunday against the Leeds District Union reminded us of this game of ‘Snakes and Ladders’. In the morning foursomes the Sheffield players started up the ladders for the outward half, with the prospect for us of an 8-4 scoreline, but by lunchtime many had slid down the snakes such that the result had been completely reversed and in favour of Leeds.

So, the challenge for Sheffield in the afternoon singles was to gain seven and a half wins to secure an overall match victory. Unfortunately, some singles started snake-like with losses, but towards the end of the day we seemed to be climbing ladders with a final prospect of a 19-17 score in our favour, only for two of the last three matches ultimately to succumb to some more snake sliding. That said, our team competed valiantly with notable wins in the foursomes by Charlie Daughtrey/Mark Woodall, and in the singles by Jim, Ollie, Charlie, Mark, Tim and our latest ‘rookie’ recruit, Lewis Gill, who after being all square on the 12th, climbed a ladder or two to secure a 3&2 win.

In sum, the Leeds players played the game just too well and were worthy of their win on the day.
