SUGC v YORK

WATH GOLF CLUB: SUNDAY 14 JULY 2019

This match was staged at the club of the President, Alan Marriott, the day dawning overcast after rain but the forecast for fine weather. Interestingly, Alan was double booked, officiating for both the league match and the YIDU Team Championship for Juniors, the latter dovetailed between the league foursomes and singles matches.

In the morning foursomes the Sheffield lead pair of Lewis Hollingworth and Luke Palmowski never quite recovered from being 3 down on the 7th hole, losing by 2 and 1. They were followed by Nick King and Iain Melville, a couple of holes up most of the way, but losing two of the final three holes to finish A/S. Thereafter, our players stormed ahead: Charlie Daughtrey and Jack Wilson (8&6) with a ferocious barrage of 5 birdies in mid-round; Ollie Smith and Brandon Perry scored an equally impressive 6&5 win; Tim Brind and Neil Stones held on to their early lead (2&1); and finally, Jon Berresford and Michael Sowerby, after fluctuating up, down and all square, finished strongly to win by 3 and 2. Team points: Sheffield 9 – 3 York.

With Sheffield needing only 5 wins in the singles matches to secure overall victory, hope and expectation were high. However, when the two lead players, Lewis and Luke, were respectively 4 and 2 down on the 8th tee, the omens didn’t look too good. But the latter turned all square and secured a 2 up win. And then, the strength in depth kicked in: Nick, 5 up after 6 holes, impressively finished 7&5; Iain, being all square after surviving Matt Hull’s near hole-in-one on the fearsome 15th pond hole, finished 2 up; Charlie, after being 4 up, suffered a couple of ‘rescue’ birdies’ from Ciaran Matthews, but calmly finished the match on the 16th green. Ollie secured another fine win (6&5), Brandon (2&1); Jon, 2 down most of the round, held on to win two of the last three holes for an A/S result; Michael strongly secured a 5&3 win. Schuey added his own 6&5 win to the overall points score of Sheffield 27 – 9 York.

It was good to see the Plaxton family well represented again, and the York President, Stuart Dawes, valiantly completing the York line-up. The matches were played in a good spirit with handshakes all round as the visitors departed – after cheering the nerve-racking run-out for the England cricket team to win the World Cup!
