SUGC v BRADFORD

ROTHERHAM GOLF CLUB: SUNDAY 23 JUNE 2019

Despite all the dire weather we had been having over the previous days, the day at Rotherham dawned dry, but with the threat of rain later in the afternoon. So, we promoted the tee start of the foursomes, though this did not seem to help our Sheffield players as by the 7th green they were down in 3 matches and A/S in another. However, at the turn the scores had been readjusted with honours even for both sides, four A/S matches with 1up and 1down apiece. The matches eventually ended strongly for Sheffield with a 4&2 win for Charlie Daughtrey/Mark Woodall, and Ollie Smith/Jamie Harrison, Tim Brind/Neil Stones and George Mason/Conor Clarke all winning by 3 holes. Lunchtime foursome score: Sheffield 8 – 4 Bradford.

To try to beat the forecast rain with possible thunder/lightening, the singles started half an hour early – hopes raised for a first Inter-District win with Sheffield needing 11 out of a possible 24 points for the overall win? All seemed to be going reasonably according to plan as by the turn Sheffield were up in 7 of the matches. But some Bradford players staged strong fight-backs: Charlie, after being 5up on the 7th green, managed to hang on to win by 1 hole on the 18th green; Jim Tasker, from 2up on the 12th finished A/S. However, nerves were steadied with fine wins by Jamie (5&4) Ollie (3&1), and by our usual stalwarts, Tim (4&2) and Schuey (4&3). The outstanding score of the day was from Mark Woodall, in his singles match he was 5 under par after 11 holes, and had his ball teetered over into the 12th hole would have scored a remarkable 6 under, thus achieving an 8&6 win. And, we just beat the rain!

Despite the fine margins of individual game wins for Sheffield, the singles points score was much closer at 13 – 11. But the overall score of 21 – 15 suggests that we are back to winning ways with this match!
