YIDU - SECOND SUCCESS

With the Bradford and District Union being only one point below our Union after the first YIDU match, this second match (away) was crucial to our second league position at this early stage in the season. The venue was THE Bradford GC with its well manicured fairways following difficult winter ground conditions, as experienced by our junior team in early April. It was noticed how many players visited the trees on the course, and found the shots to the greens difficult to judge, just short pulling up, whilst landing on the green bounding through the back. Those conditions probably accounted for the equal 6 points score after the morning foursomes, with the stalwart pairing of Tim Brind and Neil Stones achieving a notable 6&5 win.

So to the challenge of the afternoon singles, all to play for. Early wins augured well for Sheffield with the first matches finishing in increasingly impressive style: Sam Bairstow (6&5), Lewis Hollingworth (7&5) and Tim Brind (8&7). But there always seems to be a critical period in the overall match score when fortunes can start to swing to either side, as witnessed by the spectators gathered round the 12th green and 13th tee - steady nerves required! Sam, on finishing early, caddied for Charlie Daughtrey, bringing him home with a 1up score. Three all-square scores calmed the nerves, supported by Schuey’s good win (4&3) after losing the opening holes, and solid wins of 4&3 and 6&5 from the new duo from Hallamshire, (Nick King and Jim Tasker). Again, we integrated a new junior player into our team, Brandon Perry, who had showed his potential in reaching the matchplay finals at Lindrick last year.

Particular mention needs to be made of Neil Allen, who at the last minute found himself in the position of having to “step up to the Captain’s plate”, take his clubs out of the car and tee up. To his immense credit in his singles match, with a knee-knocking putt from just off the front of the 18th green and his wife Chelle’s heart beating overtime, the ball just slid past the hole, thus achieving an A/S score. Congratulations, Neil, on your debut and your captaincy!

Our winning match score was 23 – 13 points.
