Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs

Sheffield Cross the Line

It could hardly be described as a cliffhanger, but any excitement that was lacking was more than made up for by contentment as Sheffield secured a third successive Yorkshire Inter District Union title on Sunday.

One round of matches still remains to be played, but no-one now can catch Neil Stones's men, who underlined their superiority with a victory against Harrogate by 32 points to four. With two halved games in the morning and eleven victories in the singles, only one of which went as far as the dramatic finishing par-three at Sickleholme, it was not until the final singles game of the afternoon that Harrogate were able to record a win.

“I have to say congratulations to all the players,” said Stones. “Not just those who have played today, but everyone who has turned out for us at one point or another in the season. It's not just a team game, it's a squad game.”

Certainly Sheffield have greater resources than their opponents at the weekend, who, despite having only twelve clubs in their union, came in to the match on the back of three consecutive victories. There was little they cold do about a Sheffield team which included recent English Amateur semi-finalist Nick Poppleton in its usual mixture of youth and experience.

“I think the team for the final game at Halifax might have a few new faces in, but we are certainly looking to win. It's not often you get the chance to have an unbeaten season, so we will be going for victory,” said Stones. “But it is nice to know that the trophy will be waiting there for us regardless of the result.”
