CENTURIONS CAP A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

More than 300 golfers from across the region gathered at the Sheffield Holiday Inn Royal Victoria for the annual dinner and prize winners’ presentation of the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs.

Highlight of the night was a special award to five stalwarts who have each represented the union more than 100 times.

Richard Jones (Wath), Shaun Tarplett (Hillsborough), Tony Gelsthorpe (Tinsley/Renishaw), Iain Mackenzie (Hillsborough/Hallamshire) and Martin Haddock (Wheatley) were presented with specially-commissioned caps to mark their achievements.

Other highlights included presentations to the Doncaster junior team that won the SUGC junior team championship, the Yorkshire inter district team championship and the England junior team club championship.

Josh Berry, also of Doncaster, won the best British under 10 and goes on to represent GB at Pinehurst next year.

Barclay Brown, of Hallamshire, (below) also had a great season, representing his club and country, as well as being, at the age of 14, the youngest winner of the Sheffield Plate. He also won the Junior Champion of Champions.

Phoenix also had a great year, defending their first Division title in style.

Meanwhile the union saw one of its start players Joe Dean win the English Amateur Championship while local heroes, now professionals, Danny Willett and Matthew Fitzpatrick have been in winning ways of the European Tour.

The Union’s senior team won both the Yorkshire Inter District team championship and the league.

The evening, sponsored by iGolfStudio, was led by Union President, Daran Johnson, who hosted his guests, the senior figures from the regional golfing scene.
