THRILLS GALORE IN MATCHPLAY FINALS

The last main event of the Union’s golf season produced the customary tight finish in the matchplay finals held at Lindrick on Sunday.

Nathan Fell edged out rival Mick McGuinness on the second extra hole to secure victory in a thrilling day’s golf while Rotherham's Aaron Nairn won the junior event beating Sitwell's Daniel Cox 2/1.

Fell, playing on his home course, needed a birdie to clinch the match after a spirited assault from his Phoenix rival.

The 18-year-old was 2 down after 11 but he managed to win four consecutive holes to put him within striking distance of victory.

But McGuinness put up a great fight with a birdie at 16 and a remarkable half with a sand save on the next to set up a tense finale. He shot to the green on Lindrick’s par three finishing hole while his opponent found himself in the first left hand trap up against the lip. His rescue attempt hit the face of the bunker and the ball ended up in the next hazard. Fell’s resultant 4 was not enough to finish the match as McGuinness rolled his putt for a tap in win.

The last main event of the Union’s golf season produced the customary tight finish in the matchplay finals held at Lindrick on Sunday.

The pair halved the 19th hole, with Fell’s long birdie putt spinning around the hole and staying out to deny him victory.

The match was over on the next when Fell’s approach dropped five feet from the pin and his birdie ended a great attempt by McGuinness.

Meanwhile Rotherham’s Aaron Nairn, won the junior matchplay title with a 2 & 1 victory over Sitwell Park’s Daniel Cox. He was one down after 14 holes but three consecutive birdies from the 15th were enough to win the John Jarman Trophy.

In the semi finals, also held yesterday, Nathan Fell beat Ian Clarke (Wath) 2&1. He was two down with five to play but birdied 14,15 and 16 to win on the 17th. Mick beat Scott Clegg while Cox progressed past Josh Wright.

Aaron reached the final beating J Wilson (Hallowes) one up
