SHEFFIELD CLAIMS COUNTY DOUBLE

Sheffield rounded off a fantastic season on Sunday clinching the Yorkshire double in a thrilling encounter.

The team won the 42th Yorkshire team championship at Bingley St Ives beating rivals York by four points in a closely fought contest.

Represented by Nathan Fell, Jordan Perry, Nick Poppleton, Neil Stones, Jamie Harrison and Matt Evans with reserve Richard Hodgkinson, the victory saw Sheffield retain the title and follows last week’s success in winning the Yorkshire Inter District League where once more York were beaten into second place.

On Sunday Matt Evans proved to be Sheffield’s golden boy, shooting a remarkable 68 and a 67 for a 135 to win the best 36-hole score on a day when the CCS was 73 in the morning and 72 in the afternoon.

Full results were: Nathan Fell (71/74), Jordan Perry (80/81), Nick Poppleton (70/70) Neil Stones (76/76), Jamie Harrison (73/74), Matt Evans (68/67).

Total scores were Sheffield (880), York (884), Leeds (897), Harrogate (904), Halifax & Huddersfield (909), Bradford (916), Teesside (929), East Riding (930).

Last weekend the Sheffield squad clinched the Yorkshire Inter District Union Championship when Gary Fullwood sank a 15ft birdie putt to snatch the title at the death.

With close rivals Halifax-Huddersfield losing 24-12 against Bradford at Northcliffe the putt was the one that lifted the crown.

In the meantime Hallamshire's Barclay Brown became Junior Champion of Champions at Hillsborough with a gross 69. The runner-up was Callum Macfie, Lindrick.
