NICHOLSON STORMS TO VICTORY

The tail end of Hurricane Bertha disrupted golf across the region over the weekend but Crookhill Park’s Mark Nicholson managed a stormer of his own on Saturday.

He won the Sheffield Union’s Stroke Play Championship staged at Wheatley thanks to an eagle 3 on the second extra hole in a play-off against Kealan Lowe from the home club.

Both players had finished the 36 holes with scores of a one over par 143 forcing the play-off in blustery conditions.

Graham Needham, SUGC secretary said: “It was an excellent competition and the course was in a great condition considering the weather the night before.

"The green staff had worked very hard in providing such a course.”

Meanwhile on Friday the SUGC Junior team pulled off another win at the expense of Bradford at Northcliffe GC. The boys completed a clean sweep in the foursomes winning by a margin of 12-0. The afternoon singles saw all the matches drawn producing a winning score of 12-24. Best result in the morning saw the pairing of Greg Denton and Julian Wood winning 8&6.

Earlier in the week in better weather three Sheffield Union players were in action in the Boys’ under 14 Open Amateur Stroke Play championship competing for the Reid Trophy at Enville GC.

The three - Charlie Daughtrey (Rotherham) Barclay Brown (Hallamshire) and Callum Macfie (Lindrick) all made the cut and went on to finish in the top 20.

Charlie finished in fifth place overall with a 1 under par final round and ending +4 for the Championship while Barclay was placed 17th  at +11.

Callum finished in 18th place and +12 and was also runner up for the best nett prize.

One competition that did succumb to torrential rain was yesterday’s JH Aitchison Trophy which was abandoned due to a waterlogged course at Sandhill.
