TICKELL CLINCHES SHEFFIELD PLATE

Hallamshire's Greg Tickell became the Sheffield Open Amateur Champion yesterday in a thrilling day of golf which went to the wire.

His two-round three under score of 139 saw off a challenge from Worksop's James Smedley who finished on 143 and Luke Robinson of Hornsea who carded a two over 144.

Tickell was level par after 18 holes, three shots adrift of clubhouse leader Smedley (pictured below) who came home with a fine 2 under 69.

Tickell ( pictured above) was sharing second spot with in-form Gary Fullwood of Wath and Joshua Morton of Huddersfield, but a birdie on the first hole in the afternoon round put him in a immediate position for a tilt at the championship and he went on in fine form to set a new course record for Hallamshire's black tee course with a fine 3 under 68 to lift the Sheffield Plate on his home turf.

"My game was pretty solid all day and I didn't lose a ball which helps around here," said Tickell. "The greens were really good to putt on and you knew where the ball was going from the moment you hit it."

A field of almost 60 from a wide catchment area competed for this year's Sheffield Plate which had been rearranged from its postponement in May due to poor weather.

Hallamshire was unusually calm and players enjoyed sunshine in the morning round, although many found the fast running greens a challenge.

Sheffield Union of Golf Club's president Martin Brewis who presented Tickell with his trophy said: "We are delighted to see the best players in the region competing in our premier event. We have witnessed some great golf on an excellent and challenging course."

Other prize winner were 4th Tom Sadowski (Hallamshire), 5th Gary Fullwood (Wath); best morning round Joshua Morton (Huddersfield); best afternoon round Tim Brind (Abbeydale)
