HAT TRICK VICTORY FOR SENIORS

A near-flawless singles performance saw the Sheffield Union senior team consolidate its position at the top of the Yorkshire Inter District Union league with a resounding 30 points to 6 win over Harrogate at Oakdale.

Sheffield edged the morning foursomes winning three games and snatching a half when Lindrick juniors Nathan Fell and Bailey Gill birdied the 18th to complete a dramatic recovery from 4 down at the turn.

The impetus from this turnaround was carried by all the players into the afternoon singles, but none more so than young Gill himself, who recorded four birdies and an eagle in the 12 holes it took him to dispatch his opponent.

Dominic Moon was playing his first senior game of the season and saw off the dangerous Jack Lampkin in the top singles match. Pannal's Will Rushforth notched the home side's only point in the singles by managing a half with Nick Poppleton in game two. As for the rest, it was ten out of ten for Sheffield, which came within a breath of a very rare clean sweep of all twelve singles.

Sheffield Captain Richard Hodgkinson said: "It’s a remarkable result. Although we had some big wins in the singles, it is equally pleasing that we came through without exception in several tight games. The players are scrapping to the end, enjoying playing for Sheffield and for each other, and it is a great feeling to have such momentum with us. The next match can't come soon enough!"

Victory at Oakhill was the team’s third win on the trot as Sheffield maintained an unbeaten run in defence of the county title for the fourth successive year.

It follows a 23-13 win over East Riding at Wortley earlier this month when a good start in the morning foursomes saw wins for the pairs of Nick Poppleton and Lewis Hollingworth, Sheffield Champion Neil Stones and Kealan Lowe, Richard Bee and Jordan Perry, and a thumping 7&6 win for Tim Brind and Gary Fullwood.

East Riding's strong top order looked as though the visitors might stage something of a comeback in the afternoon, but Sheffield showed its own resolve. Each of the first four games went the distance, with Ben Brewster coming back for a half, and Poppleton and Hollingworth securing last hole victories.

After that, Sheffield's later order players put on a powerful display with heavy wins for Bee, Perry, Isaac Simpson and Joel Cartlidge, and a second close win of the day for Lowe taking the winning margin to double figures.

As it stands Sheffield and York have 100 per cent records after three games with Sheffield ahead by virtue of a superior points difference.

Huddersfield-Halifax provide Sheffield's next opposition at Sitwell Park on July 13th, and the home side will be looking to overturn the result from last year, when a tight game at Meltham ended in Sheffield's only defeat of 2013.
