Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs

OLD HEAD, NEW HEAD

Former secondary school head teacher Martin Brewis has been elected President of the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs for 2014.

Martin, a past Captain and President of Wortley Golf Club, succeeds Graham Needham who reverts to his valuable role as the union's Secretary.

Described as a "putter in-er" by his seconder and former past President, Roy Armitage, Martin took up golf aged 13 and describes the game as his number one sport of choice.

A Lancastrian, he was a Bristol University team player before he moved to Sheffield and joined Wortley.

He said: "My mother and father said when I was 13 that they would set me up in the game of my choice and it was golf. That was 60 years ago and I still enjoy the game today."

As a former head he said it as natural that he wanted to encourage juniors to take up golf and that he was delighted with the new link between the Union and the Peter Cowen Academy Junior Tour.

He added that he was looking forward to the continued successes of both senior and junior teams in the coming season and he would be keeping a close eye on former Sheffield Union starlet Matt Fitzpatrick who, as US Amateur Champion, makes his debut in the US Masters in April.

"It is an enormous honour and a privilege to be President of the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs. It is the pinnacle of my career. I follow some illustrious Presidents, including Geoff Hulley and Roy Armitage from Wortley, and I will be supported by a great team of officials."

Silkstone Golf Club's past Captain and President, Daren Johnson, was elected the Union's President Designate. Daren has has spent most of his golfing career in single figures and is actively involved in many sports as a coach and referee.

Richard Clarke of Stocksbridge was appointed Hon Treasurer while new members of the Executive are Derek Vallance (Wath) Dave Hall (Bondhay) Andy Waple ( Hallamshire) and Nigel Thomson (Hillsborough).
