UNION LINKS WITH COWEN ACADEMY

The Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs has teamed up with the prestigious Peter Cowen Golf Academy Junior Tour to jointly promote the game to young players throughout the region and beyond.

Both organisations realised they shared a common goal in providing a friendly yet competitive environment for the development of fledgling golfers and the pair will work together with a series of events over 2014.

The 2014 Peter Cowen Golf Academy Junior Tour features four elite “majors”, junior opens and a host of mini-tour fixtures for younger boys and girls looking to learn to develop their competitive edge.

The Sheffield Union will continue to provide its own fixtures for juniors throughout the season, including the junior championship, junior matchplay, junior champion of champions, the under 14 matchplay, under 14 championship, as well as a number of team events. The SUGC Junior team will also be defending its title of Yorkshire champions.

PGA Professional Nick Huby, who runs the Peter Cowen Golf Academy Junior Tour said: "The PCGA Junior Tour is delighted to announce its collaboration with the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs. The 2014 schedule will be heavily supported by Callaway Golf with bonanza prize tables, and consist of four elite majors, a series of mini tour events, and a host of junior opens. Our aim is to provide professionally run events in a safe and friendly, fun environment.”

Martin Brewis, the union’s incoming president for the 2014 season said: ''I welcome and I am excited about the new initiative which links the activities of the SUGC with those of the Peter Cowen Academy, particularly for junior golfers.”

The juniors’ 2014 season will get under way on 23rd April with the Danny Willett Trophy at Lindrick Golf Club.

The Junior Tour and Open fixtures are designed for players with handicaps while the Mini Tour, played from the blue tees over nine holes is open to all young academy players and pre juniors. Any junior golfer looking to gain competition experience is welcomed.

Junior Tour Majors: Lindrick April 23; Rotherham May 26; Hallamshire Aug 26, Forest Pines Oct 31.

Junior Opens: Doncaster June 1; Tankersley June 8; Wortley June 21.

Mini Tour:

Phoenix May 24; Bondhay May 31; Grange Park June 7; Tankersley June 14; Rotherham June 28; Wath July 5; Doncaster July 12.
