ANNUAL DINNER & PRIZE GIVING

The world’s top amateur golfer made a surprise appearance at the annual dinner of the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs.

Hallamshire Golf Club’s Matt Fitzpatrick, until recently a Sheffield Union team player - finished the 2013 season ranked world number one, after winning the US Amateur Championship as well as the Silver Medal for the best performer in the Open Championship.

He spoke to a packed audience at The Holiday Inn Royal Victoria, via a live video interview beamed from Matt’s campus at the NorthWestern University, near Chicago, where he is undergoing a four-year golf scholarship aimed at turning him into a golfing superstar.

Russell Fitzpatrick, who attended the dinner accompanied by a full-sized replica of the famous Havemeyer Trophy, awarded to the US Amateur Champion, accepted a Special Achievement Award on his elder son’s behalf, from the union’s President, Graham Needham.

The replica of the trophy, the most coveted prize in amateur golf, featuring the names of past winner’s including all-time greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and three times winner, Tiger Woods remained in pride of place on the top table throughout the evening.

More than 300 golfers and officials, including Yorkshire Union President John Deeming, attended the dinner and prize giving evening aimed at celebrating the performances of the best local golf talent.

Mr Needham congratulated Sheffield’s senior and junior teams for winning their respective inter district leagues and had a mention for a number of individual successes.

He said:“ What a year to remember for Matt Fitzpatrick with his performance in the Walker Cup, winning the Silver Medal in the Open Championship and becoming the world number one amateur and the American Amateur Champion.

“We also have a first this year with Bawtry’s Ben Brewster winning both the senior and junior player of the year award.”

He also congratulated Neil Stones, (Bawtry), winner of the Amateur Championship; Daniel Wasteney, (Lindrick), the North of England Open Amateur Champion; Alex Fitzpatrick, (Hallamshire), the Yorkshire U14 Champion; Jonathan Thomson, (Lindrick), on his selection to the England Junior Squad; Daniel Wasteney and Joe Dean, (Lindrick), on gaining England honours; Kieran Lowe, (Wheatley), and Nathan Muffett, (Phoenix), joint winners of the Yorkshire Boys Under 16 Championship.
