ANOTHER OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE FROM THE SUGC SENIOR TEAM

After the incredibly wet weather that had descended on most parts of Yorkshire over the last few weeks, it was full credit to the staff and officials from this east coast venue that the match went ahead on a course that played extremely well.

Continuing their normal great start in the morning foursomes, Sheffield pulled out all the stops this time and came in for lunch with the perfect record of winning all six matches played, to lead by 12 points to nil. The biggest victory was credited to Tankersley Park youngsters, Lewis Hollingworth and Jonny McCallister, who had the satisfaction of defeating the home club pairing of Richard Webster and Tim Moore by the score of 7&6.

In a commanding position going into the afternoon singles, with just 7 points required for another great victory in this Yorkshire Inter-District League match, things started to slip away a little from the Sheffield team as the first three matches were all recorded as wins to the home team.

There were no further slip ups, however, as the remaining nine matches resulted in seven wins to Sheffield with the other two being halved for a final winning score of 28 points to 8.

Biggest win in the singles was credited to long time Sheffield player Neil Stones from Bawtry with an impressive 6&5 victory followed by Sam Young (Rotherham GC), McCallister, Hollingworth and team captain Ian Clarke (Wath GC) who all came in with 4&3 wins.

Overall, this was another great performance from the Sheffield Senior team who remain firmly at the top of the Yorkshire league in their quest to retain the title that they won so well last year.

It’s a home match next time around for Sheffield when they take on the best players from the Teesside Golf Union in a fixture that will take place on Sunday 5^th August at Worksop Golf Club, the home course of Trevor Slack, the current President of the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs.
