IT’S A FIRST FOR SICKLEHOLME IN THE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP !

This four man team event, played over 36 holes with all eight rounds counting towards the final aggregate score, was played under challenging weather conditions on the immaculately turned out Sickleholme course.

Rotherham held the advantage at lunchtime with a combined score of 295 with rounds of 69 from Sam Young, 71 from Jamie Harrison, 75 from Andy Unwin and 80 from Josh Shaw. Just one shot back on 296 was Sickleholme with Oliver Smith being the pick of the bunch for their team with a round of 70. Within striking distance, and very much in contention were Wath Golf Club on 303,  Abbeydale 305, Phoenix 307, Bawtry 308 and Sandhill 311.

Blustery rain showers became ever more frequent in the afternoon and the scores understandably became higher as the field struggled to cope with the unpleasant weather conditions. Not so for former Yorkshire Boys Champion Sam Young, however, as he added a fine round of 68 to his level par morning score for a 36 hole total of 137, three shots clear of Scott Campbell (Hallowes GC) and a further three ahead of home player Oliver Smith.

Sam Young drives off on the 1st hole at the start of 36 holes solid golf! Watching closely in the background is current Rotherham Golf Club Captain, Bob Unwin.

As the afternoon round progressed, this championship became a two horse race between Sickleholme and Rotherham but it was unclear until the final putt had been holed which team was going to prevail. Recording a second round aggregate score of 309 for an overall target of 605, Sickleholme managed to keep their noses in front for the closest of finishes with Rotherham just one shot back on 606.

Sicklehome’s team of Nigel Athorn (152), Sean Needham (155), Josh Newall (155) and Oliver Smith (143) showed great consistency throughout the day for this thoroughly deserved first win.

Phoenix finished overall third with a score of 612, followed by a spirited showing from Sandhill who had the best afternoon round for a total of 615.

Whilst Sickleholme created history with their first win in this, the most prestigious team event in the Sheffield Union’s calendar, it was a double disappointment for Rotherham Golf Club who just three days earlier had finished runners-up to Pontefract and District Golf Club in the Yorkshire Third Division Championship played at Pike Hills, York, On that occasion, the top two teams tied on the same score with Rotherham missing out by virtue of a worse aggregate second round.
