SUGC WIN THE YIDU TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

We arrived at Rotherham GC for the YIDU 6 man team championship with confidence and expectations high, but as we all know, nothing is ever guaranteed.

The team was made up of four Rotherham members, Jack Whaley, Charlie Daughtrey, Lewis Hollingworth & Luca Houlgate with Ollie Smith (Sickleholme), George Ash (Hallowes) and the reserve Lewis Harrison (Birley Wood) completing the team.

Jack Whaley led the the team off in the first grouping from the first tee. Although three over early in his round Jack began to battle back, eventually signing for a respectable one over 71. Charlie Daughtrey was next off the first tee but struggled with his game throughout the morning round, signing for a seven over 77. Lewis Hollingworth was our third man out teeing off from the tenth tee. Lewis played a very controlled round which ended by him just failing to get up and down from the edge of the ninth green, his last hole of the morning, to sign for a level par 70. Luca Houlgate was our forth man out playing from the first tee, and similarly to Lewis,  played a very steady round matching his 70. Ollie Smith was our last player to tee off from the first and was quickly under par. That however abruptly changed with a lost ball on the seventh hole, which led to a double bogey. Undeterred by the set back however he continued to score well,  eventually signing for an excellent two under 68. That left only our last man out, George Ash, who as per Lewis started his round from the tenth. By his own admission George struggled from the tee throughout the morning, but testament to his character still signed for a one under 69. With the new rule change of only five scores out of the six to count, both morning and afternoon, Sheffield were top of the leaderboard on 3 under.

Into the afternnoon rounds we went leading by five shots from Halifax & Huddersfield. Jack Whaley and Charlie Daughtrey set off from the tenth tee for their second rounds and both got off to poor starts. Credit to both players however who battled back to post very good rounds of one over 71's. Luca Houlgate played another steady afternoon round but was disappointed to drop a couple of shots on his back nine to post a two over 72. With three very good rounds of the afternoon already recorded things were looking promising.

Attention turned to Lewis Hollingworth who had started his afternoon round from the first tee. Despite a double bogey on the eighth Lewis played very well finishing his round with an excellent score of 69, one under. Ollie Smith who by his own assessment hadn't hit the ball to his usual high standard all day completed his second round not long after Lewis. A second round of level par 70 giving him a two round total of two under. Given his own self assessment that was a somewhat remarkable effort. All the team and supporters now gathered around the eighteenth green to wait for our sixth and final player, George Ash. A fantastic up and down from short left of the last green had George signing for a second consecutive one under 69.  Job done by the players and an unbelievable combined total of three under.

Sheffield were YIDU 6 man Team Champions by a margin of 23 shots. George Ash claiming individual honours with a 2 under total,  beating Ollie Smith on a count back.

Many thanks must go to the Sheffield Union Executive members that have worked tirelessly to make sure the day was such a success.

Also many thanks to Rotherham GC for hosting the event and presenting the course in great condition.
