MATCH REPORT SUGC v HALIFAX & HUDDERSFIELD

And so to Halifax West End: memories of our last encounter there against HHDUGC two years ago were still fresh in our minds at the narrowest of defeats when H/H had won the last match of the season by the last putt of the last player on the last green!

Last Sunday morning the foursomes started well for Sheffield with three pairings up and two others all square by the 7th tee. But fortunes changed: the top pair of Jim Tasker/Nick King eventually lost 2&1; Conor Clarke/Jon Berrisford were 3up on the 15th tee, but, when the opposition staged a strong rally, finished A/S, as did Michael Sowerby/George Taylor after the lead had swung both ways throughout the match; Nathan Fell/Luke Palmowski had found themselves 5 down after 7 holes owing to some remarkable birdie play from their opponents, which contributed to the 6&5 loss. Neil Stones/Tim Brind were just edged out 1 down on the last green. The stars of the morning were Ollie Smith/George Mason, the latter fresh from his commendable achievement of 49th place in the Brabazon Trophy, who raced to a 6&5 win, Ollie sinking a birdie from George’s fine pitch on the short par three 13th hole. Foursomes score: 4 – 8 points.

Our players were well aware of the challenge facing them in the afternoon singles. After the first nine matches the overall results were evenly split, four wins and an A/S to both sides. The clear challenge then was for Sheffield to achieve wins in the remaining three matches, but in the end the opposition proved to be just too strong.

Points of note: our lead-off player, Nick, achieved a notable all square result against Yorkshire’s county player, Josh Morton; Nathan had a strong 4&3 win, likewise Ollie 2&1; George Mason, 2down on the 14th tee, rallied to score a 1up win, and Conor, 1down at the turn, a 3&2 win. In sum, after a valiant Sheffield team effort, the overall match result was: 14 - 22 points.
