YORKSHIRE INTER-DISTRICT TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

SUNDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 2018 at KNARESBOROUGH GOLF CLUB

One more challenge.....

The 2018 YIDU Team Championship was staged at Knaresborough Golf Club. The parkland course is attractively set along tree-lined fairways with a variety of undulating holes, all with their individual challenges, including several tight dog-legs. The day dawned overcast with a forecast of showers, some sunshine and strengthening winds. The effects can be seen in the CSS of 75 (Rd 1) and 73 (Rd 2) for a par 72 course.

Our Sheffield team consisted of two regular TC and County players, Nathan Fell and Lewis Hollingworth, two ‘veteran’ stalwarts, Tim Brind and Neil (Schuey) Stones, and two ‘newbies’, Nick King and Jim Tasker (the Hallamshire duo). The morning’s play proved to be challenging in the weather conditions, but Tim and Jim recorded a fine 74 and 75 respectively for the team to be placed 3rd on countback, 1 shot behind the leaders Bradford.

For the afternoon round true to the forecast the wind strengthened to gusty at times. The challenge was writ large. The highlights were Nathan’s run of birdie–eagle-birdie on 14, 16, and 17th, the eagle achieved with a drive 3 feet from the hole! Lewis recorded an excellent level par round, with a birdie on 18th. Lewis and Jim shared the highly commendable combined score of 149. All our players’ scores were in the 70’s bar one, achievements to be proud of. The result was a joint second place score of 913 for Sheffield, Teesside and Harrogate, again on countback 4th for our team.

Congratulations to the Harrogate Union and YIDU officials for a well organised championship, and to the East Riding Union for winning it for the first time in 45 years and especially to Andy Woodhead, their captain and President, who owing to a last minute player retirement teed up and ‘led from the front’.

And finally, the Sheffield Union was presented with the Inter-District League trophy to Neil Allen, a proud moment for our captain in his first season, amid resounding applause – well done and thanks to all 30 players chosen to play for the Union. Onwards and upwards to the challenges of next season!
