In Form Bairstow Races to Strokeplay Win

A six-under par 67 over the rolling terrain of Silkstone gave Hallowes's Sam Bairstow a comfortable victory in the Sheffield Strokeplay on Sunday.

Powerful driving and a sure touch on and around the small greens contributed to a three shot winning margin over two more experienced campaigners, Ian Clarke of Lindrick and Bairstow's club mate Stefan Priest.

A fast start, with birdies at the second and a two over the water at the fourth set the tone, and Bairstow completed a stress free day with twelve pars and six birdies. Following a fourth place in the Yorkshire Amateur at Cleveland, his handicap now stands at plus-three,, and this represents a high point in a solid year in which he has played regularly for both Yorkshire and with notable success in Sheffield's men's team.

Phoenix's Mick McGuinness took fourth with a two-under par 71, with four players matching the par of 73, on a day when the sun shone and only light breezes troubled the players.

The leading 16 players qualified for the first round of the Sheffield Amateur Championship at Sitwell Park on September 17th.
