ANNUAL DINNER RECOGNITION FOR JARMAN

Sheffield Union’s Junior League team captain was singled out for special praise at the annual prize giving presentation where a new trophy was named after him in recognition of his continuing successes while bravely battling a devastating illness.

John Jarman, who this season led his team to victory in the Yorkshire inter district league and individually won the Sheffield Junior MatchPlay final for the 3rd consecutive year, is recovering from a serious eye infection that has left him almost blind in one eye.

Union President Martin Brewis praised the Hallowes youngster when he collected his Matchplay trophy at the annual prize giving night at the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria.

The President said: “You are a very special young man. I cannot speak highly enough of you.”

He told the audience: “At the beginning of the year John was on a school visit to the CERN Hadron Collider in Geneva where he contracted a very serious eye infection, which after several operations has still left him with almost no sight in one eye.

“This infection has meant that he has had to put on hold his A levels and his place at University, and he has struggled to cope with playing golf.  Yet being captain of the junior league side he has been present at all matches, playing in several, and he volunteered to be reserve at the 6-man championship.

He told John: “You can now keep the original trophy - we have got a new one for the Junior Matchplay Championship which we have decided to name The John Jarman Trophy, in your honour.”

The announcement was a highlight of the evening attended by more than 300 of the regions top amateur golfers and members of local clubs.

They heard Yorkshire Union President John Shaw (pictured below) thank Sheffield’s contribution to a highly successful year for the county on courses across Britain and worldwide.

Mr Brewis also praised a number of individual successes and celebrated the great showing of both the Union’s senior and junior squads.

He said: “Many congratulations to those who have collected trophies tonight. At both senior and junior level, there have been some outstanding successes.

“The seniors had another highly successful year winning the inter district team championship and coming runners up in the Inter-District league.

“The juniors won the Yorkshire Inter-District league for the third successive year - the future of golf is surely safe in the hands of these boys.”
