BOOTH WINS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Home advantage proved a bonus for the second time this week when Worksop’s Louis Booth yesterday claimed the Sheffield Open Championship on his own turf.

The 19-year-old recorded scores of 67 and 73 for a 4 under par total of 140 to claim the sought-after Hughes Cup in a fine day of golf at Worksop Golf Club. He is pictured below with the trophy and Sheffield Union President Martin Brewis.

Despite the great score, it was not all plain sailing for Booth who found himself one down early on after three putting the 2nd hole for a bogey.

Birdies at the 7th and the difficult 9th put him in a good position for a push on the back nine. Further birdies on the 12th and 17th and an eagle on 15th gave him a great score of 5 under par 67.

Booth had a steady start to the afternoon round and found himself a further 2 under after the 6th but he came back to earth with a double bogey on the 9th, a bogey on 12th and another double on the 14th.

He steadied the ship on the 16th, rolling in a 30 foot putt for birdie and he held his nerve to come back with a one over 73.

“The weather was nice and calm in the morning and the course and greens were excellent which helped me get into a nice flow,” said Booth.

Wath’s Nick Poppleton, pictured above, put up a great fight but his birdie on his last hole for a 72 was not enough leaving him trailing Booth by just one shot. Two very steady rounds of 69 and 70 saw him finish with a three under par 141.

The Sheffield Open Championship is competed each year by the leading amateurs and professionals from the Sheffield Union’s 41 affiliated clubs.

Leading professional, who receives he Lockwood Salver, was Matthew Wright of Silkstone with 146.

Earlier in the week Hallamshire’s Greg Tickell had the advantage of local course knowledge that helped him claim the Sheffield Plate.
