FITTING FINALE

The match went to the last hole where Stone’s par was enough to defeat his opponent who missed the green on Lindrick’s par three 18th and failed to chip into contention.

Stones and Young had defeated Shaun Angell (Rotherham) and Dean Longden (Phoenix) respectively in the morning semi finals.

Young started the final by firing two consecutive birdies but an unlucky out of bounds on the fourth saw the match tighten up.

It continued nip and tuck setting up a nail-biting finish.

Sheffield Union president Graham Needham who refereed the match said: “It was Sam’s big hitting against Neil’s great chipping and putting on the day. They both excelled themselves to produce a great match.”

Stones collected the Past Presidents’ Trophy for winning the knockout event that is contested by the union’s top 16 players over the season.

Meanwhile the Junior Matchplay Competition played behind on the Lindrick course on a bright but blustery day also saw some great golf with John Jarman (Hallowes) retaining the trophy he won last year beating Tom Bradley (Abbeydale) 3&1 after overcoming Sam Rook (Tankersley) 5&3 in the semis.

“There was a very high standard of play throughout and the final was a close contest until the last few holes,” said Mr Needham.

Bradley put up a fight but rued a missed opportunity on the 15th where a short putt lipped out and he hit his drive into the gorse on the 17th.

Young needed a win in his match to have claimed the Tee Up Trophy awarded to the highest point-scoring player in matches over the season. The prize, first presented by Sheffield Newspapers in 1973, went to another Bawtry star, Ben Brewster.
