FITZPATRICK IS OPEN QUALIFIER

The 18 year old carded one under par 141 with rounds of 69 and 72 at Gullane No 1 in a field that included Colin Montgomerie and former Ryder Cup captain Mark James.

The two other qualifiers were fellow amateur Ben Stow, from Rushmore in Salisbury and Sweden’s Oscar Floren.

The former Sheffield Union Junior, who won the Boys Amateur Championship last year and is an England Boys international, has only just finished his A Levels.

His success, which will see him compete against the world’s best at Muirfield on July 18, follows a poor showing in the Brabazon where he said he was rusty.

Matt said last night: “After hardly playing due to exams my expectations were not high but the conditions today really suited me – wet and windy, just like it often is at Hallamshire. I was really happy how I played and can’t believe that in three weeks I could be playing with Tiger Woods.”

Other Sheffield area players to compete at Muirfield are Danny Willett and Lee Westwood.
