GARY IS SUGC AMATEUR CHAMPION

First played for over one hundred years ago, this match-play event boasts a number of outstanding past winners including former County Champions Ian MacKenzie, Steve Field, Tony Gelsthorpe and Richard Jones plus European Tour star and television golf pundit, Mark Roe.

Winner Gary Fullwood Wath GC with SUGC President Trevor Slack

With the semi-finals and final being played on the same day at Lindrick GC, this championship is not only a test of a player’s golfing ability but also their mental and physical durability as well.

                                                            Nathan Rogers Wortley GC

In the morning semis, Gary had a titanic struggle against Wortley’s Nathan Rogers. On the 18th hole, Nathan missed a twelve foot putt to win the hole and the match after Gary had expertly got down in two from short left of the green on this par three hole.

So it was into sudden death for these two players and after halving the first two extra holes, Gary eventually triumphed on the 21st just in time to enjoy a spot of well-earned lunch.

In the other semi, youngster Liam Senior from Lees Hall GC defeated an out of sorts John Bragger from Hillsborough GC by 4&3 to set up an intriguing 2012 final.

With just four holes left to play, Fullwood found himself in the pleasant position of being two holes up but a fighting birdie from Senior on the 15th meant that it was still all to play for with the distinct possibility of extra holes being required once again to separate these two players.

                                                          Liam Senior Lees Hall GC

Wayward tee shots on the 16th and 17th holes proved very costly to Liam, however, and Gary ran out a worthy winner by a score of 3&1, repeating the triumph by fellow Wath member Richard Jones in this prestigious championship back in 2009.

After losing out in a playoff last year for the Sheffield Union Stroke Play Championship at Hillsborough, this win is all the more sweeter for Gary and it clearly illustrates his great match-play ability which has been much to the fore this season in helping the Sheffield Senior Team win the Yorkshire Inter-District Union league title.
