MAKE MINE A DOUBLE !

Played over 36 holes , with all scores to count from the six-man team, Sheffield eased their way through the field and ran out worthy winners by five shots over the Halifax and Huddersfield team, with the East Riding back in third place.

On a difficult day for good scoring, with a stiff breeze being a major factor on every shot played around the famous championship course, Sheffield came into lunch with a score of 479, six shots adrift of East Riding and three behind old rivals Leeds.

                                                    Jonny McAllister Tankersley Park GC

Jonny McAllister from Tankersley Park GC was the pick of the morning scores for Sheffield with a round of 77, followed by 78 from Sam Young (Rotherham GC) and Daniel Wasteney (Bondhay GC), 80 from Dominic Moon (Rotherham GC), 81 from Richard Hodgkinson (Lindrick GC) and 85 from Tom Perry (Abbeydale GC).

In the afternoon, Team Manager Ian Clarke covered every yard of the course in an effort to urge his players on to greater things as the possibility of a famous double became reality. He was duly rewarded with a great showing from all the team as they continued to improve on their morning performance.

                                                             Daniel Wasteney Bondhay GC

In a very tense finale, England Team member and anchor-man for Sheffield Daniel Wasteney, came in with a very classy one under par round of 72, two shots better than any other competitor in the second round. He richly deserved to win the special prize on offer for the best individual 36 hole score, with a total of 150

Other Sheffield scores in afternoon play were 75 by McAllister, 76 by Hodgkinson, 78 by Perry, 83 by Young and 88 by Moon.

Improving seven shots on their morning round for a score of 472, Sheffield’s overall 36 hole total of 951 proved too good for the fading lunchtime leaders and it was left to the Halifax and Huddersfield to come through and take the runner-up spot, as they had done in the Yorkshire Inter-District Union league as well.

                                                       Richard Hodgkinson Lindrick GC

President Trevor Slack was delighted to receive the championship trophy on behalf of the Sheffield Union and was full of praise for the terrific team spirit engendered by manager Ian Clarke who would now be standing down after two incredibly successful seasons.

Congratulations to the Sheffield Team for doing the double, repeating the same feat that they achieved in the 2008 season.
