SHEFFIELD JUNIORS DIG DEEP TO MAINTAIN THEIR PERFECT RECORD

In their previous fixtures this season, Sheffield Juniors have enjoyed some very heavy wins but any idea that the youngsters from Halifax and Huddersfield were going to be push-overs on this occasion was dispelled when the teams went into lunch with six points each on the score sheet after the morning foursomes. None of these matches were won by more than a two hole margin which perfectly illustrates just how well matched the two teams were during the morning phase of this fixture.

An additional challenge for the Sheffield youngsters was that none of them had any playing experience of the Halifax West End course prior to match day, so it was very much a learning exercise for them all with twelve crucial singles matches to be played in the afternoon session.

The SUGC Juniors managed to break the deadlock in the afternoon, with decisive wins in the singles by Liam Senior (Lees Hall GC) and Nyle Challinor (Tankersley Park GC) both by the score of 6&5, Ben Brewster (Bawtry GC) 5&4, Kurtis Keating (Sandhill GC) 4&3, Lewis Thompson (Wath GC) 3 &2, Joel Stubbs (Bondhay GC) 2&1 and Nick Poppleton (Wath GC) 1up were supported by halved games from Joel Cartledge (Wheatley GC) and Isaac Simpson (Tankersley Park GC).

This meant a hard fought 22 points to 16 win for Sheffield Juniors with just two further matches to be played in the Yorkshire league.

Next up is a home game against The Teesside Union of Golf Clubs’ juniors at Wortley Golf Club on Friday 10th August.
