Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs

SENIOR TEAM CONTINUE THOSE WINNING WAYS

This latest victory was against the Bradford Golf Union who had finished as league runners up in last season’s campaign. In what was anticipated to be a close run encounter, Sheffield pulled out all the stops and ran out very comfortable winners by 29 points to 7 in this home match on the Hallamshire Golf Club course.

Winning five of the six morning foursomes matches, Sheffield went into lunch in a very strong position leading by 10 points to 2. Heavy wins by the score of 6&5 from Jamie Harrison (Rotherham GC) and Tom Perry (Abbeydale GC) plus John Bragger (Hillsborough GC) and Dominic Moon (Rotherham GC) were the highlights of a fine team effort from the home players.

In the afternoon singles, there was no letting up as wins by Jamie Harrison, Sam Young (Rotherham GC), Dominic Moon, Jonny McAllister (Tankersley Park), Richard Oades (Abbeydale GC), Neil Stones (Bawtry GC), Lewis Hollingworth (Tankersley Park), David Briggs (Renishaw Park GC) and veteran Richard Hodgkinson (Lindrick GC) made certain of an outstanding win for Sheffield. Hodgkinson’s victory by the large score of 8&7 was in fact the best of the day.

This win puts Sheffield in a great position at the head of the Inter-District table as the only unbeaten team in Yorkshire. The Halifax and Huddersfield Golf Union are currently in second position following two wins and one halved match this season.

In the next round of fixtures, Sheffield will be away to the East Riding Golf Union on Sunday 8th July at Bridlington Golf Club.
