SENIOR TEAM RACK UP YET ANOTHER LEAGUE WIN

Having come through a close fought match against Harrogate three weeks ago, Sheffield were keen to build on that success and went into lunch leading by 7 points to 5 in the morning foursomes. Wins from the pairings of Daniel Wasteney & Joe Dean, Scott Campbell & Mathew Fitzpatrick and Sam Young & Richard Hodgkinson were supported with a valuable halved match from Tankersley Park Golf Club youngsters Jonny McCallister & Lewis Hollingworth.

In the afternoon singles, the opening match was a battle of Yorkshire County Champions past and present with Richard Law (2008) from Low Laithes on this occasion getting the better of Daniel Wasteney (2012) by a score of 2&1. Just as a Leeds fight back seemed on the cards, Sheffield then made a decisive move by rattling off six wins in the next six matches ; Mathew Fitzpatrick (3&2), Scott Campbell (6&5 pictured above), Joe Dean (3&2), Jamie Harrison (2&1), Sam Young (3&2) and Tom Perry (5&4).

Further wins by Richard Hodgkinson (4&2) and Richard Oades (4&3) with another halved match from Jonny McCallister meant that Sheffield came out winning this match handsomely by 24 points to 12.

Even though Lewis Hollingworth lost his singles match, he had every reason to fondly remember his exploits on the Wetherby course after holing his tee shot on the 180 yards 13th hole for a magnificent hole in one.

The Yorkshire Inter-District League is back in action in two weeks’ time with Sheffield playing host to the team and officials from the Bradford Union at Hallamshire Golf Club.
