Macfie Wins North of England U16s

Lindrick’s Callum Macfie followed in the footsteps of another notable young Sheffield player by capturing the North of England Under 16 Championship at Pannal.

Matthew Fitzpatrick had taken the title at the same venue in 2010, and, needless to say, it took some impressive scoring from Callum to replicate Fitzpatrick’s success.

After scores of 71, 68 and 69 Callum (above, with the trophy) took a five shot lead into the final round, where he had to hold off the fast-charging Matthew Jackman of Southport and Ainsdale. Jackman’s final round 67 saw him post a total of 280 (-8), but a fourth consecutive under par round, this time a 71, brought Callum victory by a shot, with third placed Max Hopkins some distance behind on -3.

It was due reward for a summer of hard endeavour for Callum. “I’m delighted to finish my last Under 16 event with a win,” he said. “It’s been It's been a tough year with both injury and exams. However, I've been working really hard on my game for the last 3 to 4 weeks, so I'm pleased it all came together for this event. I was fourth last year and really wanted to win it this time.”

It is another impressive individual achievement by a Sheffield golfer in a year which has seen success for both the boys and men’s teams, and a plethora of young players lining up to emulate Fitzpatrick’s successful progression into the professional game.
