JUNIORS ON THE BRINK OF TITLE

JUNIORS WIN TO STAND ON BRINK

A thumping 28-8 victory over Leeds at Normanton leaves Sheffield’s Junior Inter District side on the brink of a league title.

It was a commanding performance from the start from a powerful and confident Sheffield team, who took four of the morning foursomes to lead 8-4 at the break. The top singles game was one of only two all day which went to the 18th, Rotherham’s Ben Schmidt finally winning two up against  Cookridge youngster Nathan Ali.

Jack Liversidge of Abbeydale, who has made two starts for the Sheffield men’s side this year, extended the lead with a 2&1 win over Jamie Dunning of Moortown, and Turner Shield winner Tom Osborne of Lindrick took Sheffield within sight of victory by winning the third game. The day’s only serious mishap was George Nicholson’s hefty reversal in game four, but the line was soon crossed by George Mason and Oliver Sullivan.

Daniel Lee played a magnificent shot to the final green to overcome Phoenix’s Brandon Perry, but aside from that it was all away wins, and whilst ultimate celebrations must wait until Sunday’s game at Bondhay against Harrogate, the champagne is definitely on ice.

“Even if we lose the last match, we will almost certainly win the title on ‘goal difference’,” said joint manager Dennis Clarke. “It was another terrific performance. After a tight morning, we really opened our legs and showed them our class this afternoon with some big wins.”

Six wins from six suggest that the boys are likely to eliminate the need for that to come into play, and the players and management team should be able to celebrate another excellent season in style at the weekend.
