ANNUAL DINNER CELEBRATES ANOTHER WINNING YEAR

The 89th annual dinner and prize presentation sponsored by iGolfStudio at the Holiday Inn proved another sell out success.

More than 300 players and officials attended a night out to celebrate the Union's great season and to award individual and team prizes.

President Dennis Clarke and his guests from other districts in Yorkshire and beyond (pictured below) were in attendance and reflected on a number of achievements.

The Top Table

They included those of former union stalwarts Danny Willett, Matt Fitzpatrick and Lee Westwood - a trio that made up a quarter of this year's European Ryder Cup squad. Danny Willett provided the icing on the cake pulling off a spectacular victory to become winner of the Green Jacket at the US Masters Tournament.

Back home the Sheffield men's team won both the Yorkshire League and Team Championship while the juniors also won their League.

Individual successes included Ben Brewster's course record at Fulford in the Northern qualifier for the Brabazon with an eight under 64.

The union's major individual event, The Sheffield Plate, was won by Alex Fitzpatrick of Hallamshire, pictured below.

Golfer of the Year was Tankersley's Lewis Hollingworth (pictured below with his grand father). Lewis also won the Stroke Play Championship. Junior Golfer of the Year was Jack Wilson from Hallowes.

Away from union events, Clive Downing from Hillsborough (pictured below in joyful mood) won the England Golf Medal to become the men's handicap golfer of the year.

Nick Poppleton (pictured below) won the Lee Westwood Trophy at Rotherham and Tom Slattery and George Taylor from Sitwell Park came first and second in the European Junior Open held at Garforth. The union also had a number of players who represented Yorkshire or were successful in county events.
