SENIORS' BIG WIN BUILDS MOMENTUM

By Richard Hodgkinson

Sheffield inflicted a bruising 28-8 defeat on their visitors from Teesside at Rotherham on Sunday. Following their 22-14 win at Leeds in the previous game, momentum seems to be building for Sheffield as they look to retain the Inter District title they so narrowly won in 2015.

The Victorious Sheffield Team

York, who defeated Sheffield 19-17 in the season's first round of fixtures, maintained their 100% record with victory over Leeds and remain favourites, but Sheffield Captain Neil Stones is not one for going quietly. "We'll push hard all the way, and this was a comprehensive performance which can only build confidence," he said, having restored himself to the side and being one of eight players to win both morning and afternoon.

Five foursomes victories out of six in the morning, and by margins of 7&5, 4&2, 4&2, 5&4 and 4&3 put the result in little doubt even before the afternoon singles had started. Home favourite Matt Evans may have lost the top singles game, but five wins and a half in the following six games ensued, and Sheffield's experienced tail end could relax in the knowledge that the young bucks at the top had closed out the match out emphatically.

Stones, just back from holiday and using a borrowed putter having arrived at Rotherham without his own trusty weapon, was full of praise for his young charges. "Ben Brewster, Nick Poppleton and Charlie Daughtrey all won both games at the pointy end for us, and it saved further wear and tear on the nerves for those of us at the back," he said. "Now it's on to Wath and try to get another big win there, keep that momentum going."

Sheffield's opponents at Wath will be East Riding, on Sunday 10th July.
